PROJECT DESCRIPTION // Adelaide Cemeteries Authority, West Terrace Cemetery Interpretation Plan
SCOPE // Interpretation plan, interpretive elements concepts and budgets, detail design and documentation including engineering, implementation and tourism and cultural plan. Liasion with heritage representatives in council to seek approval for implementation
DETAILS // The West Terrace Cemetery (WTC) is Adelaide’s oldest cemetery and today WTC is one of the only capital city cemeteries still operating in Australia, and is registered as a ‘place
of State heritage significance’ on the Register of State Heritage items. An interpretive policy was developed for adoption including key themes and interpretive concepts along with an implementation plan and cultural and tourism plan. The critical design brief for the interpretive elements proved significant, particularly in design of the footings of interpretive signs near grave sites, ensuring no encroachment of the sign and footing upon the heritage site. Visually the signs were required to fit with the Authorities existing signage strategy and prove to be non-invasive within the cemetery, maintaining it's key role as a place of reflection and respect for lives lost.
